Wheeling Steen is Old Norse for 'Resting Stone'.  A local family, whose forebearers have lived on Westray for centuries, have adopted this old term for their gallery and tearoom.

Edwin Rendall and his wife Elaine took a space at a car boot sale in the early 1990's. Edwin put a few photographs in frames and Elaine brought some of her home baking.

From this beginning, the Wheeling Steen Gallery was opened in 1995. At that time it was more of a hobby than anything else as farming was Edwin's main occupation. It has now developed into a family business and in November 2008 they moved into a new purpose built Gallery. Being self-taught has allowed Edwin to explore and experiment with different media. Apart from photography and traditional painting methods you will also find natural materials incorporated into his work.

Elaine now provides the home bakes for the tearoom. She also works in the Gallery during busier times.

Rosemary, their daughter, works in the gallery and produces her own range of crafts, including a large range of handmade cards and tealight candle holders.

Their son Norman worked with Edwin building their new premises and his time is now taken up with the family farm which runs a beef suckler herd.

Our aim is to produce work of a high standard and present it in an innovative way. We do our own printing and framing, the majority of our frames being hand finished. The new gallery was designed to be a small visitor attraction rather than just creating more retail space.

We always endeavour to recycle packaging and glass off-cuts.

As a supporter of the Westray Fairtrade Island status we use fairtrade goods as much as possible in our tearoom.
